End of Holiday Training 2009

Hi to all MUTW members!

Just a reminder that this Friday the club will be holding its last holiday training session for 2009, between 5.30 p.m.- 7.30 p.m. in the Mind Body Studio of the Melbourne University Sports Center. With a new year fast approaching, now is a good time to say a big THANK YOU for your wonderful support throughout 2009. Our training sessions will recommence sometime in January, I hope you will all return for another busy and exciting year with MUTW in 2010.

And last but not least, I would like to say thanks on behalf of the club to those senior members (Chris, Eugenie, Ben, Lok) who have graciously volunteered their time to take classes during the holidays. You guys are awesome.

Have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year :-)

Kind regards,

Sandra Qian
MUTW Secretary

Annual General Meeting

Greetings all,

This Wednesday, the 14th of October, the Melbourne Taichi and Wushu club is holding the Annual General Meeting, in which all members of the club get to have a say in the future of the club. It will be in Squash Room 8, in the Sports Building between 2 and 3 pm.

The most important thing we need to do is to determine positions for next year's committee. Those positions that need to be filled are:

- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- General Committee
- Performance Co-Ordinator
- Social Co-ordinator

Being on the committee is not a lot of work, but it is a lot of fun and we are encouraging everyone who is interested to run for a position, even if it's just a general committee member. If you are interested in the roles of each member, or want to nominate yourself or a friend pelase email us back, or just let us know during training tonight or on Tuesday.

Thanks,

MUTW Committee

Monash Cross-Training

Hey guys,

Hope holidays (if you have them) are going well and if not, hope you're still finding the time to chill out. Don't forget to train though, because it's that time of year again where we get a look into how the Monash University Wushu Club operates, and demonstrate to them how epically awesome we are. But to cut it short, here are the details on the cross-trainings

Monash Cross Trainings

  • 8th Oct (Thur): We're leaving as a group at 1815 from Melb Uni campus to get to Monash (Clayton). Training time is 1930--2130

  • 16th Oct (Fri): The venue is changed to West Stadium (upstairs) in the Sports Centre to accommodate a larger group. Training time is still 1730--1930 as usual. I will be leading the group for dinner after training to the Tibas Lebanese Restaurant, 504 Sydney Rd.

Please reply to me as soon as possible, and tell me if you're coming to either/both of the cross trainings so I can get an idea for numbers especially on:

  • People who need to carpool in order to get to Monash. We have a couple of cars available, but if there are more people than can currently fit, we'll need to organise more cars.
  • People who are coming to dinner afterwards so that I can book the restaurant

I hope everyone can make it, and any questions, just contact me.

Cheers,

Jp

Event: 25 September Beijing Wushu video screening

Hi all

The Beijing Wushu Team has generated many great athletes, champions, coaches, performers and actors including Jet Li. Having the eye opening experience of watching the Beijing Wushu Team perform live at my school twice, I can tell you that its team members are pretty talented and amazing.

Since it is not practical for us to travel to Beijing to see the Team, we'll virtually bring it to Australia! Next Friday Lily will be showing us the Beijing Wushu Team and probably some state/national championship videos. This will be held on 25th September from 4pm to 5:15pm, just before our Friday Wushu training, during the September university non-teaching period. The venue is Theatre B in the Old Arts building. See campus map.

Holiday Training

Holiday training for taichi and wushu will be held during the mid-semester break at the usual times and places. Our advanced members will be taking these sessions instead of the masters.

See training details for more information.

The event lasts for the whole day and celebrates cultural diversity. Our MUTW performance team is having a public performance there in the afternoon. The event program will be published soon.

Event: 11 August Master Lily's birthday dinner

After training Tuesday 11th August, we'll be heading down to Ants Bistro (Ma Yi Hong / Red Ants) at 7 Corrs Lane in China Town for dinner.
Corrs Lane is in between Exhibition and Russell Sts, so you can get on to Little Bourke St from Swanston St and head towards Exhibition St. You turn left into Corrs Lane after cutting across Russel St. Each dish costs about $15. If you order on average 1 dish per person, it's about $15-17 per head depending on numbers. You can BYO alcohol. It costs no more than $1.25 per person for bottle opening.

We'll be leaving from the Sports Centre at 1830 after training (to give people enough time to finish up on forms and to get changed), then take a tram down Swanston street until we reach Chinatown.

Event: 29 May Master Liu's birthday/end of semester dinner

Hey all!

Hope uni and such isn't too stressful, and assignments and revision work aren't piling up too much. An awesome way to unwind however, is to show up to training next Friday (29th of May) and then come celebrate the end of semester and Master's Liu's birthday (1st of June) at Tiba's Lebanese Restaurant in Brunswick (03 9380 8425). It's at 504 Sydney Road, and is just a short tram ride up Royal Parade to stop 25.

I've booked tables for 8pm, so we'll leave straight after training. Mains are $10-13.50 (at last check, but I don’t think prices would have gone up too much) and they have vegetarian options. They only take cash, so please keep that in mind. RSVP back to me as to whether you can make it or not, but I hope see you all there.

Eat lots of ice-cream and chocolate, and train hard! All the best for the last week of uni.

Jiapei

Zi Ran Men Kung Fu Academy is offering you a rare opportunity--to participate in a workshop by Master Yanwu and Master Liu Deming featuring the rare Chinese martial arts of Bagua (Eight Trigram Palm) and Xingyi Boxing.

Furthermore, Zi Ran Men Kung Fu Academy will provide a series of optional sessions following the workshop to give participants an opportunity to consolidate what they have learnt.

Master Liu and Master Tanwu will be hosting the workshop alongside Master Han on the 18th of April (last Saturday before we head back to University). For those of you new to the club, this workshop might be hard and too full on, however if you're really interested, that shouldn't be an obstacle.

Please note we CANNOT take money for this, it has to go to Master Liu, please contact him at info@ziranmen.com.

The following films will be screened with no guarantee as to order:
(written mainly by Matt)

Fearless tells the story of Huo Yuan Jia, a young boy who defies his father to learn Wushu. After becoming the champion of Tianjin he goes through a personal quest of self discovery and helps China during the period of English colonisation through fighting.

Ip Man (starring Donnie Yen)

Donnie Yen plays Ip Man (Bruce Lee's shifu) in a story about the Sino-Japanese war and how Wing Chun was used during that period to defend the Chinese people. It is one of the best fighting films in recent years, so if you missed it at the cinemas, this would be a great time to catch it!

Kung Fu Panda is awesome :p

Awesome needs no synopsis.

Foundation

For anybody who doesn't know him, Sam Gold used to coach for MUTW--and a damn fine coach he was, too.

Well, he runs classes of his own now: a system he calls 'Foundation' with a strong focus on technique, breathing, and some serious cultivation of strength. If anybody's interested--anybody who wants to get all the kinks out of their moves and give their general fitness a kick in the arse--here are his training times:

Tuesday 1900--2030 Foundation Training

Wednesday 1845--2045 Advanced QiGong and Foundation Training

Thursday 1900--2030 Foundation Training

The first class is free, then after that it's $15 per class, or $20 for the two-hour advanced session. Trust me, it's worth it.

CHANGE OF VENUE: All Foundation classes will now be held at the Middle Park Primary School Hall, corner of Mills and Richardson streets. It's still near Albert Park, just on the other side. The 96 tram from the city will get you near enough to go the rest of the way on foot.
