*Insert Generic Title Here* + Some helpful Videos

Just a quick reminder on what will be happening during the holiday:
Wushu
Friday         29/3: No training
Tuesday     02/4: No training
Friday         05/4: Informal Training @ North Court (5.30pm-7.30pm)
Taichi
All classes will run as usual.

Now let's talk about last Friday's training.

We started off with the usual laps around the track, followed by stretching, and then we headed back to the Mindbody studio to start kicks. During the kicking session, apart from the basics that have already been taught, we introduced the front sweep and back sweep for the beginners to try out. While it's only two new moves, it can be quite difficult to learn along with all the others especially when you have no prior martial arts training. I also noticed many newbies and even some returning students have a hard time learning certain things. As a result, here is a list of videos that might let beginners(and seniors!) have closer look at what they should be doing and in general what they can do to improve their technique:

  1. Horse Stance 马步
  2. Bow Stance 弓步
  3. Crouching Stance 仆步  a.k.a Flat Stance
  4. Front Kick 正踢腿
  5. Outside (Crescent) Kick 外摆腿
  6. Inside (Crescent) Kick 里合腿
  7. Side (Stretch) Kick 侧踢腿
  8. Spring Kick 弹腿   (advice in text)
  9. Front Push Kick 蹬腿   (advice in text)
  10. Front Sweep 前扫腿
  11. Back Sweep 后扫腿

The majority of  these videos came from two Youtube Channels, first is JadeXu's Official Channel and the other is Flashmavi. Both have a bunch of other good instructional videos that may be worth checking out. Apart from these videos, everyone should always feel free to ask the coach or any seniors at training for advice. I promise that we are all friendly people!

After the kicking session, we then split the class into beginners and seniors. The beginners practiced quite a few basics such as punches, kicks, Five-steps and even the precursor to the front jump kick! That's actually quite a fair bit to learn only 3 weeks into the semester, I hope nobody feels overwhelmed, we've all been through that ^_^ . While this was going on, the senior's side were doing their jump kicks, people started showing off and then we had to do some conditioning. It was pretty tiring, and then the beginners joined us for even more conditioning. Needless to say, the next morning my neighbors heard many random old people noises coming from my house.

From what I could see, three weeks into training after a holiday that was way way way too long, everyone was doing pretty well (surprisingly). The beginners that joined us recently have also improved steadily, so keep up the good work!

Semester 1 Welcome Dinner + New Club T-shirt!!

On Friday the 15th of March, following hundreds of years of tradition (not really), MUTW held its annual Welcome Dinner at some random restaurant in Melbourne.

The night started right after a great session of pain training, with people just hanging out in the Mindbody Studio, making introductions, having lively chats while waiting for others to get ready. It was very encouraging to see a good mixture of senior members and fresh faces in the group of twenty which decided to stay for dinner. When everyone was finally ready, we went to the restaurant together. While the road to the restaurant is uneventful as usual, I must say that some of our senior members, the fit and beautiful young people that they are, walk as slow as molasses in January (June, July, August in Aus but you get the idea).

Upon arrival, we were seated at our reserved tables and ordered our dinners. The individual portions at this restaurant are pretty big, so most people shared dishes. There was not a silent moment at dinner, even after the food arrived, conversations were still going strong with topics ranging from what we did this summer to "Why am I being volunteered to write this blog?!?!" Just lovely. Anyway, someone ordered chicken livers and pig intestines, so I'm sure lots of people had things to say about that too. We stayed for quite a while after dinner, having fun catching up and passing the pig intestines between the tables.

Eventually we had to leave when the restaurant started dropping hints that they wanted to clean up and close soon. Unfortunately we forgot to go get ice cream (another MUTW tradition), I'll be sure to bring that up next time. Here's a picture of everyone who showed up!

Almost everyone...

Oh WAIT WAIT! An announcement as well! *clears throat*

We are getting new club t-shirts! Yay! While the t-shirt we currently have fulfills its purpose, I feel that it's starting to look kind of bland and makes me look fat. So I totally welcome this decision from our committee! While I do not have a picture of the new shirt, I can show you guys the new logo that will be going on the back:

Pretty Good huh? :)

Special thanks for our very own Kylie Sy doing all the work in putting this together!
